Bootleg

lain Bootleg is a two-CD box set consisting of a 45-track music CD and a data CD. The data CD includes two screensavers, various wallpaper images, Quicktime movies, sound files, MP3s, and a mini-game.

[If you have the data CD and want to install it, you might need to use the installer provided on Pioneer's website]

Mini-game walkthrough and screenshots

After you install the mini-game, opening the lain launcher gives you this neat little clock for your desktop. lain clock
If you click on the purple bar underneath the time, you can access another menu. menu
Clicking on the minute hand brings you to "lain kuma shoot". shooting game

Guide to the shooting game:

The shooting game is quite straightforward. There are three classes of "characters":
1. bears
2. family members
3. Lain

A max of three characters can appear on screen at any given time. Each character on screen has an associated point value. The goal is to accumulate as many points as possible.
Point values:
brown bears: +5
white bears: +10
Yasuo: -1
Miho: -5
Mika: -10
Lain: 0
The only characters you can "shoot" (actually, they disappear in a puff of smoke when you click on them) are the bears, thereby increasing your score. Clicking on the family members or Lain does not do anything. When the family members appear, you lose points automatically when they disappear on their own. If there is some strategy to maximize the number of bears and minimize the number of family members that appear, I haven't found it yet. However, the foolproof method of accumulating points is to "shoot" the bears, and whenever a family member appears on screen, close the window before you lose points. Simply restart the game to continue getting more points. The game remembers your score even if you close the program.

By clicking on the middle button on the menu, you activate the "lain dress up" game. The number of points you accumulate on "lain kuma shoot" determines what outfits you get for the dress up game. Here's what it looks like when you've gotten the max number of points. dress up
Here are the point values required to get each article of clothing or item:
10 : screwdriver
100: school uniform
200: street clothes
500: kuma pajamas
900: pocket navi
1400: ufo
2000: oversized sweatshirt

Click the clothing and drag it onto Lain. When you leave the dress up game, Lain walks off in whatever she's wearing. dress up
Drag the screwdriver onto Lain's hand and let go. If you place it properly, Lain will end up holding the screwdriver. Leave the dress up game and go to "kuma shoot". Eventually, a different Lain will appear that causes an explosion. During the explosion, the point values of all characters are multiplied by 10. By clicking on the blue button of the menu, you activate the "lain theatre" game. Toggle between several locations by clicking on the purple bar and then click on the location you want. You are treated to a special animation if Lain is wearing the appropriate article of clothing for the given location. Otherwise, she'll just walk past the location.

When Lain is wearing her school uniform, have her go to school. school
When Lain is wearing her street clothes, have her go to Cyberia. cyberia
When Lain is wearing her kuma pajamas, have her go to her darkened room. room
When Lain is wearing her school uniform and holding her pocket navi, have her go to the steps at school. school
If you drag the UFO onto Lain, she turns into "glain" (grey lain). Have her zoom on over to Alice's place. alice
When Lain is wearing the oversized sweatshirt, have her go out to the street. street

Also, at 2000 or more points, the final location becomes available to you. Select the bridge to see the game's ending. Warning: if you select this, your point total will reset back to zero, although it's really easy to get it to 2000 again (see above).

Songs on the Bootleg data CD

There are 57 MP3s on the data CD. Those are the same 45 songs found on the Bootleg music CD (but several of the tracks on the data CD are significantly longer) plus 12 extra songs. Perhaps this was a secret freebie for those fans who bought Bootleg?

Here's a comparative track listing:
