About Us (according to our friends)

By: Gregory Marques and Lillian Olsen

Ah, young love. So sweet and pure, so gentle. I'm talking about Lawrence Eng and Carol Kim, who are soon (at the time of this writing) to be blissfully wed. Fortunately for them, they have many friends who could write about what wonderful people they are. Unfortunately for them I'm the friend doing that writing and I am neither a kind person, such as Carol is, nor a good writer, such as Lawrence is. However! Lawrence has already written a similar expose on myself for my own wedding webpage, so I can steal liberally from it.

"I'm not [Law's] oldest friend (we only met in college) nor his best friend (I think he's marrying her), but I think I have a tiny idea what he's all about. I first ran into [Law] at CJAS, the Cornell Japanese Animation Society." Here was a man who knew how to get into something. I mean really get into it, dig in deep; entrench himself and become something. I saw him do this with both anime and the web. In order to better understand the characters in anime he enjoyed, Lawrence would pantomime their every move. He practiced the way they danced, the way they fought, the way they pined for unrequited loves, the ways they might react if their school cafeteria was suddenly attacked by commandos crashing through the windows and filling the place with toxic gases. Lawrence is not satisfied with a passing understanding of something, he needs to analyze it from every angle, figure out how it works, become one with it. I'm sure he's taken this approach with Carol, as she's the most important thing he's got.

All during college I thought that my friends were naïve, innocent guys when it came to dating. But then we found out that all this time, Law had been hiding someone as charming as Carol. And then we find out they've known each other since kindergarten! It was just like an anime love story! I'm not much of an expert on Carol as I've only met her in person a few times. But even in such fleeting acquaintance Carol projects a beautiful personality; she's the most winsome person I know. Lawrence is so lucky to have sweet Carol, who understands his desire - no, need - to own everything that is To-Y. Carol is lucky to have someone as wise and sensitive as Lawrence, who understands her desire - no, need - to own everything that is Chococat.

We thought it was so cute how he had thought about her for so long. And just like a love story, it finished with a happy ending. Congratulations Lawrence and Carol, may you live happily ever after!
