| Tonight, we're showing the third and final OAV of Boku no
Marie, also known in America as My Dear Marie. For those of you
who missed the first two episodes (or for those who have forgotten or were
too busy napping), Boku no Marie is the classic tale of: guy meets
girl, girl ignores guy, guy stalks girl and builds an android clone of her,
girl meets clone, girl finally goes out with guy. After watching last
week's episode, I'm sure that many guys out there in the audience tonight
are wondering the same thing I am, namely, why are so many attractive women
after this guy and where can I find some? Well, that's probably not the
only thing that you're wondering (if you're male), but the other question
wouldn't be printable here. Anyway, my one real question is: Why are so
many beautiful girls going after a guy like Karigari? I mean, although he
is devoted, in an obsessed stalker sort of way, he's not that considerate,
observant, courteous, or good-looking.  Maybe it's the Bill Gates factor;
after all, anyone smart enough to create a sentient android in his basement
is likely to be incredibly rich in the future. Still, in all fairness, I
suppose I have to admit that Karigari, like Marie and Mari, has a kind heart
which makes up for all of his other deficiencies.
To Sleep, Perchance to DreamIf you thought that the idea of a college student building a fully
functional android was a little strange, or were surprised by the way in
which Hibiki chose to express her love for Karigari (is it just me or does
her name bring an image of Ryoga to mind?), then you haven't seen anything
yet. This is the OAV in which things definitely start to get weird. When
Mari (the girl) describes one of her dreams to Marie (the android), it
causes her to wonder why she doesn't dream while she sleeps (why does she
sleep anyway? she's a robot). At any rate, she asks her "brother" if he can
give her a program that would let her dream. Conveniently enough, he has
already come up with one and has a demo movie ready for her
practice-dreaming pleasure. The dream is about the perfect relationship
between a brother and his sister -- or at least in Karigari's opinion. Just
like all of the other times he's brought this subject up, his opinions are
just a tad conservative and ever so slightly outrageous. Naturally, Marie
finds it incredibly dull and moves on to the real thing with a series of
dreams that are a good deal more... interesting. I personally think that
the writers just decided to go all out and have a good time, as some of the
dream sequences get a little out there (whips and chains?). Romance,
Comedy, Science Fiction, Action, Plain Silliness, this episode has it all.
If you were hoping for a definitive ending that ties everything together,
however, that's the one thing that this OAV does not do. Like Ah! My
Goddess (which we will be showing starting week 6), this series is meant
to be only a small sample of the manga series and does not try to do much
beyond introducing the main characters. So sit back, relax, and watch the
craziness begin.
