Otakon?

Post by SoxMike »

So, I remember getting and responding to this CJAS e-mail way back in the fall about Otakon.

It recently struck me that I've never heard anything more about this. Are we as a group doing something for Otakon? Do we historically? If we aren't, why aren't we? I'd really like to finally make it to a con, so why not the biggest of them all?

Yes, I'm still organizing group hotel for Otakon and there is still space. If you're interested, send me an e-mail and I'll add you to my list. I currently have 6 hotel rooms reserved and have plenty of space.

For con registration, since there are no group discounts, if you plan on going, you should go to www.otakon.com and register yourself.

I too responded to the Otakon email and was put on the list serv for it. I also checked the old records of the Otakon list serv and learned that discussions about the convention occurred prior to the end of the semester, something I am sure we have not had yet. I've already registered to attend Otakon and am awaiting news about the hotel information and other such things. Unfortunately, I must also begin to beg to bum rides with people to get down there. I do not want to spend the however much it is to get down there by Amtrak and will not drive down to Baltimore.

James, is there by any chance not-obscenely-expensive PARKING at the hotel?

I planned to drive, but it totally slipped my mind that I would need to, you know, STOP somewhere when I got there.

The parking at the hotel is rather expensive. There are parking lots in various nearby locations which are a bit less expensive, but still not what I would call "cheap." When I first went to Otakon back in 2003, there was a parking lot right next to the convention center which went for only $10 a day. Nowadays it will be more like $15-20, with hotel parking possibly higher. Unfortunately all the hotels and parking lots know the Otakon dates and drive up their prices for the weekend.

I just sent an email yesterday and haven't heard back from you yet James. I presume you are busy with work, but I would like to hear back on something soon

The problem is, usually you can only get one autograph. (Actually I got TWO Seki Tomokazu's autograph last year), but that really depends on how long the line is. Usually they hold two autograph sessions so theoretically you can go to both (what I did last year)

I suppose I could use my second opportunity to get you an autograph if I can get to. If I can only get one I am keeping it myself.
An alternative is asking someone who doesn't care about autographs to just get you one.

For some reason all my friends keep asking me about Otakon rooms. I need some sort of automatic redirect to James Kao for my IM conversations.

I was not successful in getting a yamaguchi kappei autograph.

he did shout a inu yasha attack during the panel though (along with other stuff which I'll describe in my report)
